Is Reclaimer a Cult? 🧐

Hey there! Thanks for checking out Reclaimer College Church! Whether this is your first time hearing about us or you’ve been coming to our services and events for a while, you might have seen some posts on Reddit or heard comments from friends. “That church is sus,” “avoid them at all costs,” “they’re gonna brainwash you.” Trust us, we’ve heard them all.

We know these rumors are out there, so we wanted to take some time to answer some common questions and hopefully give you some clarity and a little peace of mind for you that no, Reclaimer CC is not a cult!

Does Reclaimer College Church follow sound doctrine? Are they a legitimate church?

Yes! Reclaimer College Church is part of a larger organization of churches called Acts2 Network. Acts2 Network is officially a part of SEND Network and the Southern Baptist Convention and holds biblical orthodox beliefs (you can check out our Statement of Faith on the About Page of our website if you’re curious).

In the past few years, Reclaimer College Church has partnered with a bunch of other ministries you might recognize, like Filter of Hope mission trips, Dare2Share, Navigators Noblemen, and Cru Chosen Watch Parties, and Compassion International.

On a network-wide scale, Acts2 Network hosted a nationwide college retreat called AWC this past January with over 1,000 college students from across the country. We had some incredible guest speakers, including Cliffe Knechtle (National campus speaker and founder of GiveMeAnAnswer.org), J.D. Greear (Christian Author and Pastor of Summit Church NC), and Dhati Lewis (Founder of Rebuild Initiative Inc.).

I’ve seen online posts and heard things about past emotional and spiritual abuse in Acts2 Network? Are those true?

We know there are posts online where people have shared past negative experiences within our church network. We want to be honest and transparent about that. Whether those posts are accurate or not, we don’t want to dismiss anyone’s experience. The truth is, as a church made up of imperfect people (mentors are imperfect too!), it’s inevitable that some students over the years have been hurt or had a negative experience. When this happens, we pursue reconciliation as Jesus commands (Matthew 5:23 and 18:15), but sadly not everyone chooses to respond to these efforts and instead some resort to anonymous online writing.

That said, with all who profess to be followers of Jesus Christ we try to stay committed to pursuing holiness, living God-honoring lives in community (1 John 1:9, 2 Timothy 2:22, Ephesians 5:3), and speaking truth to one another with love and graciousness (Ephesians 4:15, Hebrews 3:13). We recognize that speaking truth and encouraging one another according to these verses can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, and we do our best to learn from past mistakes and become a more loving, welcoming community that can genuinely love God and love people!

We encourage you to come see for yourself and decide if your own experience with us aligns with the things you read online.

Is Reclaimer College Church anti-dating?

No, Reclaimer does not have an anti-dating policy. But as a college-focused church, we’re very aware of how strong and often unhealthy the dating culture on college campuses can be. Things like hookup culture and the way it can make students who aren’t in a relationship feel left out or lonely can have a real impact on campus life. As a church, we want the Bible to be our ultimate authority, and Scripture speaks clearly about romantic relationships (Hebrews 13:4).

No one aims to control relationships or discourage dating, and in fact every year some students are in relationships. But for those students who seek it out, mentors at Reclaimer give biblical advice and guidance on how to uphold biblical principles that can protect people from hurt and regret in the area of dating and relationships.

Why are they always on campus trying to meet students and advertising their events?

Yep—you’ve probably seen us around campus handing out free snacks, stickers, little squishies, flyers, and hot cocoa! Just like other campus orgs, clubs, company recruiters, and even the university itself, we want to let people know we’re here and what our community has to offer!

But there’s more to it than just advertising for our stuff. We’re also trying to follow Jesus’ call to share the good news of the gospel with the people around us (Matthew 28:18-20, Romans 10:14, 2 Corinthians 5:20). That’s why you’ll regularly see us on campus talking with students, answering questions about faith, and doing outreach!

Hopefully this gives you a better sense of who we are and why we do what we do. We all know the internet is full of stories and takes, some real and some not so much. The best way to know what Reclaimer College Church is really like is to come hang out! You’ll find a community that loves people, has fun and laughs, wrestles with real questions, and strives to live out lives centered on the Bible.

If you have any other questions or just want to chat, feel free to reach out through our Contact Page. We’d be happy to answer your questions and share our own experiences at Reclaimer College Church! If you want to come see what we’re about, Sunday Service is a great place to start!
